Ranked number 2 on a recent survey*, 50% of Brits agreed that weather conditions such as rain, fog, snow, wind made them feel unsafe on the road.
It’s road safety week this week 19 - 25 November and we’re looking at road safety in preparation for the Autumn / Winter months.
For cyclists, preparation of your bike, your cycling kit and spares is essential during the colder, darker months and our top tips would be to:
Service - has your bike had a recent service? Are you maintaining all moving parts, tyres and lights?
Be Seen - darker months mean checking that you have working lights on your bike, we’d also recommend reflectors and high vis, waterproof clothing.
Cleaning - winter months mean salty roads, be sure to wash your bike regularly to avoid costly repairs from salt damage.
Tyres & Muds Guards - you may want to contemplate changing your tyres and adding mud guards to your bike for additional safety and protection.
Prepare yourself for cold - use layers, gloves, a thermal flask for liquids.
Spares - add more into your spares kit and make sure it’s waterproof, if your saddle bag isn’t waterproof then protect the contents in a smaller plastic bag first.
Remember to always wear your helmet.
Finally,
When out on the road look properly - the most common contributory factor in fatal cyclist accidents or serious collisions (FSC) with another vehicle is due to a driver or rider failing to look properly.
For drivers:
ensure that your vehicle is winter ready (check tyres / screenwash levels / windscreen wipers)
when travelling make sure that you leave plenty of travel time
leave extra stopping distance between you and other vehicles
for wintery conditions - keep a snow shovel / brush / blanket and any emergency items in your boot for the season
If you’ve been injured in a Road Traffic Accident that wasn’t your fault whether as a cyclist, a driver, passenger or a pedestrian, then please contact Sarah Tagg at Norrie Waite & Slater on 0114 276 6166.
