With the new football season now well underway, thousands of supporters are once again heading to matches across the country.
For the vast majority, matchday is simply about supporting their team. However, if you are arrested or facing criminal allegations in connection with a football match, the consequences can extend beyond the offence itself and may include a Football Banning Order.
Football Banning Orders are designed to prevent football-related violence and disorder and can be imposed by the courts in connection with certain football-related offences.
An order can have a significant impact on someone who regularly attends matches, potentially preventing them from watching their club both at home and, in some circumstances, abroad.
Depending on the circumstances, restrictions can include:
- Being prohibited from attending regulated football matches in the UK for a number of years
- Exclusion from specified areas around football grounds on matchdays
- Requirements relating to international fixtures and tournaments, which can include surrendering your passport at specified times
- Other conditions considered necessary by the court
