A City of Blue Plaques

Celebrating Sheffield’s Football Heritage - A City of Blue Plaques

Sheffield’s rich footballing history has once again been brought to life through a newly released short film by Sheffield Football Club, celebrating the growing collection of blue plaque sites located across the city.

The film shines a spotlight on the 15 blue plaques now positioned in and around Sheffield, honouring the people and places that helped shape what is widely recognised as the birthplace of football and the Football Association itself.

From historic grounds and meeting places to influential figures who helped establish the modern game, the plaques form a fascinating trail through the city’s sporting heritage - something sure to appeal to football lovers, local historians and proud Sheffielders alike.

For those wanting to explore further, visitors can take a city-wide tour of the plaque locations or discover more through the excellent publication “Making the Invisible Visible – Sheffield Home of Football”, a book which captures the stories behind these iconic locations and the people connected to them.

At Norrie Waite & Slater, we are incredibly proud that our East Parade offices are among these celebrated sites, with our own blue plaque positioned proudly outside our front door.

The plaque recognises the significance of the site in relation to Sir Nathaniel Creswick KCB, one of the founders of Sheffield FC - the world’s oldest football club - and a hugely important figure in Sheffield’s footballing story.

As a long-established Sheffield firm ourselves, it is an honour to be connected to such an important part of the city’s history and heritage.

We would encourage anyone with an interest in football, local history or Sheffield itself to take the opportunity to explore these remarkable sites and celebrate the city’s unique place in the story of the beautiful game.

⚽ Sheffield truly is the Home of Football.
